Biker dies in Topsham Road collision

Open-heart surgery at roadside unsuccessful

Despite the best efforts of Devon Air Ambulance paramedics, a young motorcyclist has died in a collision on Topsham Road, Exeter.

Crews from two air ambulances, three emergency response vehicles and two ambulances were among those trying to save the 22 year-old man and 82 year-old pedestrian in the incident just after 3 p.m. on Friday, outside the Aldi supermarket.

Flowers now mark the scene. Sergeant Harry Tangye says it was a sombre day but the air ambulance paramedics gave the young man every bit of hope possible. He's also paid tribute to the manager of Aldi saying he was a "total hero, to casualties, the witnesses and emergency services."

The elder man in the incident was flown to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth with serious injuries.

Topsham Road stayed closed for several hours for forensic investigations. If you witnessed the collision, please contact police on 101, quoting log number 557 of 24 August
