Bomb handed in at Exeter police station

A bomb has been handed in to an Exeter police station, after being used as a doorstop for the last 40 years.

Bomb disposal experts were called to Heavitree Road police station to deal with the package which was reportedly handed in, in a carrier bag.

Local reports claim that a Royal Navy bomb squad from Plymouth was sent to the station on Sunday morning to ensure that the device was safe.

The owner told police at Heavitree that he wanted to get rid of it as part of a weapons amnesty running at the moment because it had got too rusty.

It was discovered that the bomb, which apparently dates back to the 1950s, had already been deactivated.
