Could Exeter Cathedral be sold off?

Cathedral has been in city centre since medieval times

The Cathedral occupies prime land in city and CoE has identified serious [financial] faults

One of Exeter’s most desirable properties may be going on the market, if some national reports are to be believed.

If worse came to worst Exeter Cathedral, which has been in financial difficulties over recent years, may have to meet debts by raising money: and like anyone with property and debts, the house might have to go to pay off the creditors.

Its owners, the Church of England, is thinking about asking for the law to change to stop cathedrals taking such drastic action. But in a report going to its top dog-collars next week, Exeter’s named along with Peterborough as having “serious fault lines.”

It’s tried to raise money in recent years by charging for entry - up from free to £7.50, although you don’t have to pay to pray.

The Cathedral’s been on prime city centre land since medieval times, and costs a lot to maintain.

There’s high demand in the area for retail, leisure and commercial uses, but no one’s suggested (yet) that the Cathedral should be demolished to make place for student flats.
