Devon roads melt in heatwave

This road at Woodbury Salterton in East Devon isn't weathering well

Surfaces fail as the mercury rises

It's getting sticky out there!

As temperatures hit the high 20s, some Devon roads are starting to melt. And it may not stop any time soon. The current highs won't be the last over the coming months. Forecasters expect a series of heatwaves through to September.

And when temperatures top 30C, the bitumen in some road surfaces may soften and rise to the top. The good news is that, for most, it needs to be nearer 50C for matters to become that serious - and that's possibly not happened since the dinosaurs were pups.

Jack Cousens, the head of roads policy for the AA, says: “Drivers may get a surprise as the gritters make a return to our streets. However, rather than spreading salt, they will be dusting sand on the roads as a form of sunscreen for the tarmac.”

Devon County Council have not confirmed whether any of the vehicles have been sent out to spread granite dust or sand onto any affected roads in the county.
