Proposed combined service won't go ahead as planned

Devon and Cornwall won't be merging with Dorset - we can just about say now.

They've been working on plans for two years - but both police and crime commissioners and both chief constables needed to agree.

But for Devon and Cornwall, commissioner Alison Hernandez took everyone by surprise last week when she said she wasn't minded to merge. Today her police and crime panel have agreed with her, voting 12 to 4 with one abstention.

The decision is due to be made formally on Monday. Earlier this week, Devon and Cornwall police published the business plan, showing a merger would save 70 million pounds.
