Flooding forces closure of walkway at the Stover Canal

Walkway

Heavy rain and the resultant flood water has forced the closure of a pedestrian walkway at the Stover Canal.

The Stover Canal Trust have said that they have been left with no option but to close the towpath in the area over the Fishwick Feeder to prevent harm to users.

The many weeks of heavy rainfall, and the resultant high levels of flood water from the River Teign which passes along the Stover Canal, has damaged the pedestrian walkway over the Fishwick Feeder.

Trustee of the Stover Canal Trust Rob Harris said: “The walkway provides safe passage over the original feeder channel from the River Teign. The area is almost always waterlogged and repairs will be a challenge to our volunteer workforce.

“The timing is unfortunate as we are presently concentrating on works at Ventiford Basin, which have been planned for many months and will be funded in part by the Tesco Bags of Help initiative running at the moment, and the lock at Teigngrace. To now have the extra task of making good the damage for seasonal users will certainly stretch our resources, both physical and financial.”

Trust Vice-chairman, Paul Taper, added: “We received notification from a member of the public of a problem and on inspection the decision was taken to close the path for safety reasons. Floodwater underneath the wooden structure has caused it to ‘float’ upwards from its foundations and so dislodging the planks which form the footway."
