Hundreds of people support Exmouth's endangered museum

A major exhibition ran today (Thursday 15th February) at the sea front Ocean complex detailing the project.

A £200,000 appeal has been launched to buy the building that houses the museum, just off the town centre, and to pay for much needed refurbishment.

Local landowner Lord Clinton, Andrew Moulding the chairman of East Devon Council and Mayor of Exmouth Brian Cole were among those at this morning’s launch which aims to raise the money to buy the museum’s home from property owner South West Water for around £130,000 – while also raising enough to fund the improvements.

Peter Cowper, trustee of the Museum Society of Exmouth, said that the museum was a vital part of the town’s heritage.

He said: “We have some 2,000 visitors a year as well as going out into schools. We also act as a community resource.”

Since opening in 1985, the museum has housed a growing number of artefacts and documents. Current owners SWW have given the Museum Society of Exmouth the option to buy the Sheppards (cor) Row building. If they can’t raise the cash, the site could go on the open market – and possibly be redeveloped – leaving the collection without a home.
