The incident happened on Cowick Street last November

A security guard who disarmed an AK47-wielding masked man as he threatened to shoot terrified children and shoppers, has been given a Judges' Commendation by the High Sheriff of Devon.

Phil Weirs tackled and helped detain Sean Monger as he brandished the deactivated assault rifle outside Tesco Express in Cowick Street, Exeter, before armed officers swiftly arrived.

Monger, 51, of Maple Road, Exeter, admitted nine firearms offences and was jailed for four years at Exeter Crown Court in May.

Mr Weirs, who had no idea the gun was a fake when he wrestled it from the offender’s grasp.

Monger, who was dressed in black and wearing a mask, threatened to shoot people outside the store on 14th November last year. He pointed the imitation weapon at a group of schoolchildren and ordered them to lie on the floor.

Phil also received £1000 which he says he'll use to buy a motorbike so he get himself a new job.

The Local Policing Commander for Exeter, Mid and East Devon, Matt Lawler said it was a pleasure to see Mr Weirs presented with the award.
