Pilot receives top bravery award

An RAF helicopter captain from Teignmouth has been given a top military award for bravery - for managing to land a helicopter damaged by enemy fire in Afghanistan and pick up British troops on the ground.

Flight Lieutenant Charlie Lockyear has received the Distinguished Flying Cross.

His Chinook came under attack from insurgents as he was about to land, wounding one of his crew ... but he managed to bring it down safely and evacuate the troops.

He says during the attack the helicopter's warning lights panel 'lit up like a Christmas tree' but he was able to keep flying it despite the damage, picking up the troops and then flying the injured crew member to hospital.
