Red Arrows to roar into Sidmouth this Summer

Sidmouth town council have confirmed that the RAF aerobatic team will grace the skies over the seafront of the East Devon town at the opening day of Sidmouth Regatta on Friday, August 24, 2018.

And with 2018 being the 100th Anniversary of the creation of the RAF, the town council have announced that they will also welcome the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight consisting of a Lancaster Bomber and two Spitfires.

Last summer, when the iconic red jets displayed, there was also due to be a Battle of Britain Flypast with two genuine original Spitfires from the Second World War, but they were grounded due to issues with the engines.

Over 30,000 spectators lined the seafront last summer and an army of bucket collectors help raise £14,500 to ensure that the return of the Red Arrows could be financed.

Town Clerk Christopher Holland said: “The Display in 2017 attracted around 30,000 spectators in glorious summer weather and was one of the best Red Arrows displays ever but unfortunately the Battle of Britain Flight were not able to fly nationally due to engine issues. Bearing in mind that these aircraft are nearly 80 years old, it is always a possibility. It is hoped that they will be making an appearance in perfect time for the RAF 100 celebrations”.

Cllr Ian McKenzie-Edwards, chairman of Sidmouth town council added: “I am particularly delighted to welcome the Red Arrows and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight in this 100th anniversary year for the Royal Air Force. It is lovely display for local people and the number of visitors to the town grows hugely. This all this helps local businesses directly and indirectly.”
