Teenage girl dead and boy in hospital after taking unknown substance

The pair from Tavistock were found on Saturday afternoon.

Officers and ambulance crews were called at around 4.15pm after the 15-year-old girl was found unwell in Crowndale Road, near to the disused viaduct.

The girl, from Tavistock, was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth where she died.

A 14-year-old boy, also from the Tavistock area, was also taken to Derriford Hospital in a critical condition. He is now recovering in hospital.

Police believe both teenagers had taken an unknown substance. Officers found it at the scene and are now testing it.

Inspector Pete Turner said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and we are providing support to them at this terrible time.

“I would like to stress that initial enquiries show that this is an isolated incident involving these two young people and we do not believe that there is any wider risk to the Tavistock community.

“We would however urge all parents and carers to speak to their children and young people about the risks of taking unknown substances.”

Police would like to speak to anyone who has information about the incident, including anyone who was in the area around the viaduct/Crowndale Road on Saturday afternoon.

Anyone with information is asked to contact 101@dc.police.uk or phone 101, quoting log number 655.
