Three weeks of temporary traffic signals

Heavitree Road

Diversion routes have been in place and caused delays for motorists

Temporary traffic signals will be in place for three and a half weeks while work to upgrade the lights at the junction of Heavitree Road/Polsloe Road/Barrack Road and Magdalen Road/Barrack Road takes place.

The announcement comes as work by Western Power Distribution to replace an electricity substation, which has caused the closure of the inbound lane of Fore Street in Heavitree at Livery Dole since July 30,  is set to finish this week.

Diversion routes have been in place between Magdalen Road and Polsloe Road and caused long delays for motorists heading into Exeter city centre.

The signals, poles and electrics will all be replaced, and cable ducting will also be repaired when work starts on Wednesday, August 29, by Devon County Council engineers. The scheme is scheduled to be completed by Friday, September 21.

A county council spokesman said. “Preparatory work is already under way at the junction of Heavitree Road/Polsloe Road/Barrack Road and Magdalen Road/Barrack Road, where the traffic lights have reached the end of their serviceable life. As much of the scheme as possible will be carried out using the existing traffic signals but the temporary lights will be used when the main signals are replaced. As with the permanent lights, any signalled crossing points will have rotating cones for blind pedestrians.”
