Woman in 50s killed after being hit by train yesterday

Flowers have been left at the level crossing in Hele.

British Transport Police have confirmed the person hit by a train yesterday (Tuesday 19th March) was a female in her 50s from the Exeter area. 

Emergency services were called to the village of Hele, near Cullompton at 1025am to reports a person had been hit by a train. She was pronounced dead at the scene and her next of kin have now been told. 

In a statement, British Transport Police said: “At 10.25am yesterday (19 March), officers were called to an area in Hele after reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended however a woman in her 50s from the Exeter area was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Her family have been informed. This incident is not currently being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Trains were delayed for hours as the line was closed. There were later signalling problems and a broken down train at Yatton near Bristol, causing further delays.
