Women set for Royal Marines' training

And they'll share dormitories with men at Lympstone

Just two women have passed Lympstone's nine-week All Arms Commando course, as part of their attachment to 3 Commando Brigade. They're now serving in senior roles in the UK military.

Now the service is to open its full time 32-week course to both men and women, after the Ministry of Defence confirmed that women can apply for close combat roles in the Royal Marines. Just over two years ago, then prime minister David Cameron paved the way for those plans. It means the UK joins Israel, Australia and the United States in allowing equality on the front line.

The Sunday Times has reported that 20 females are expected at Lympstone's Commando Training Centre early next year, following 1,350 enquiries. They'll follow exactly the same course and normal military rules demanding that accommodation is segregated will be waived, so they'll sleep in the same dormitories. This is to encourage "troop cohesion."
