More than 800 players involved
More than 800 footballers with disabilities across Devon showed off their skills at a tournament in Cullompton last weekend. Six teams from Exeter City Ability Counts, run by Exeter City Community Trust, participated in the event.
Ability Counts offers activity for adults with mental health issues, learning difficulties and physical impairments. Each team played several 20-minute matches against different opposition with similar disabilities.
Ability Counts player James Ireland, who attended the event and played for Exeter City’s intermediate team, said: “It’s really enjoyable, you meet new people and it’s great for your fitness.
“It also gives you something to do on the weekend because we also train as well. When I came here, I didn’t know anyone, but now, I know loads of people, I met new mates and we do stuff outside of football too. It’s not about being good, it’s about enjoying it and having fun.”
