Event Summary

The Sidmouth Summer Play Festival is the longest standing weekly play season in the country having been in existence for well over 30 years.

The season is made up of twelve weekly plays performed by the same acting company. The actors travel to Sidmouth each year to enjoy the seaside lifestyle but also to work hard. They are often rehearsing one play in the daytime and performing a different play in the evening. The actors also get involved with making the set, sourcing costumes and hunting for props. It’s not a job for the faint hearted!

The season has some wonderful traditions too. There is a curtain speech after every performance and the cast also say goodbye to the audience as they leave the theatre. In this way the actors get to know the audience, get feedback about the shows and even make new friends.

Since the current producing team, led by Paul Taylor Mills, took over the festival in 2013 the season has gone from strength to strength and the plays are well supported by both residents and holidaymakers. This has allowed for investment to be made in the quality of the productions and the season now has a loyal following of season ticket holders as well as regular holiday makers who see a visit to the Manor Pavilion Theatre as an integral part of their Sidmouth holiday.

The plays are a mix of comedies, dramas, thrillers and farce so there really is something for everyone to enjoy. This year there is J B Priestley’s thrilling drama Dangerous Corner to look forward to and a new production of the Oscar-winning film The King’s Speech. Patrons will have great fun with comedies from Alan Ayckbourn (Table Manners) and Ray Cooney (Wife Begins At Forty). The season starts with Suddenly At Home, a fantastic thriller from Sidmouth favourite, Francis Durbridge and ends with the hilarious farce, Tom, Dick and Harry.

The festival runs from Thursday 20th June to Friday 20th September. Tickets can be purchased from the Manor Pavilion Theatre box office either in person (10am-2pm Monday to Saturday) or by telephone on 01395 514 413 or online (24 hours) at www.manorpavilion.com.
