£25 million Sandy Park hotel approved

Video: Fly through footage shows what the facility will look like

Exeter planners unanimously approved the four-star 250-bedroom which will run as a Courtyard by Marriott.

But it will be owned by Exeter Chiefs - which is the country's only profitable Premiership rugby club. It was announced yesterday that the Premiership - or a significant part of it - may be sold to raise money because 12 of the 13 clubs don't make a profit.

Exeter Chiefs has always prided itself on being strong on the pitch and financially robust behind the scenes.

Chairman Tony Rowe says its success depends on its commercial viability - and that bringing 12,000 people to Exeter every time they play is good for the city.

Now those people will have somewhere close to the ground to stay too. Building work will start next year.
