Almost 90 jobs could be at risk

Devon's Axminster Carpets intends to appoint administrators, in a bid to avoid collapsing for the second time in seven years.

The firm's troubles are understood to be due to weak consumer confidence, delays to corporate orders and the lack of new rail franchises.

Axminster Carpets has supplied royal palaces for much of its 265-year history, having been founded by Thomas Whitty in 1755. Almost 90 jobs would be at risk if it were to go into administration.

In a statement, Managing Director Jonathan Young said: “We have filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators today which provides the Company with the required protection as we work towards a going concern solution.

“As part of the restructure that we confirmed last year our focus remains on securing a sustainable future for Axminster Carpets, this is important for the local town, our employees, customers, suppliers and consumers who value the quality of craftsmanship.

"We have been encouraged by the level of interest in investing in our brand and in retaining manufacturing in Axminster and we look forward to confirming our plans in the near future as a going concern.”

Devon MP Neil Parish said on Twitter: "We've been trying to find a solution for some time with HMRC. Axminster Carpets is a high-quality internationally recognised brand - and I am hopeful a buyer can be found. We will do everything to keep the business in Axminster & protect 90 jobs.
