Coach driver bailed

The 57-year-old driver whose coach trip ended in disaster bailed until August

A 57-year old coach driver from Exeter has been released on police bail after his coach crashed in Cornwall yesterday.

Two women were killed in the accident, involving a Carmel Coach. It was taking pensioners from Exmouth on a day trip, organised by Age UK.

The coach is thought to have taken a different route than usual because of road closures.

A major emergency was declared to attend to the 53 passengers. Four helicopters ferried casualties to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. At least eight people are still there with serious injuries. Hospitals in Truro and Bristol were put on standby.

Eyewitnesses say the vehicle was travelling quickly down a hill when it went into a hedge. The driver will answer his bail in August. He'd been questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Survivors returning to Exmouth last evening thanked the emergency services for their response.
