Confusion erupts after 'daft and misleading' street signs installed in Exeter

Confusion has erupted over the ‘clumsy’ siting of some new street signs in St Thomas in Exeter.

The new signs stating ‘Buddle Lane leading to Newman Road’ have been put in directly over the old tile signs saying Newman Road,

A few of the properties at the southerly junction of Newman Road are in Buddle Lane, but local residents have described the actual location and wording of the signage, as ‘daft’ and ‘misleading’.

And St Thomas City Councillor Rob Hannaford added that furthermore another third sign has appeared a little way down the road, reiterating Newman Road.

Cllr Hannaford added: “This has caused a lot of confusion locally. I understand that the abutting properties, in Buddle Lane, would want to have some clearer signage, but that should have been clearly number specific and it also should have been better located.

“This new signage does not help matters at all and is very misleading for delivery drivers and, for the much greater area and numbers of properties in Newman Road.

“Also adding to these matters is the fact that the new signage, that we have requested for Savile Road, where currently the old tile street signage is on a domestic property, and is covered by a large tree, has still not been installed.

“This is ever more important now that the old Westside Centre, in Merivale Road, is being transformed into a Pupil Referral Unit, so we will have many more people coming and going in the area, accessing services.”

Local campaigner Laura Wright added: “We are really hoping that a positive solution can be found about this issue, so I do hope that some better clearer signage, can be installed as soon as possible, to better help identify both Newman Road and the specific properties in Buddle Lane, and that the new signs for Savile Road, are coming soon.”

Exeter City Council, who are responsible for the installation of street signs, have not yet responded to a request for comment.
