Exeter Car Park charges to go up at least 10%

Councillors say it's to reduce congestion

The rise will come into force in April and the authority says it will help to "balance the budget".

A report - which will be discussed by councillors next week - shows the council can't support its aim of reducing congestion in the city centre without “reasonable and regular increases in tariffs”.

The authority wants to make other transport options cheaper, quicker and more convenient than driving.

The council says it is "investing heavily" in the new Bus Station which they say should encourage people to consider alternatives to driving into the city centre.

The 10% rise is expected to generate an extra £764,000.

The council is trying to find additional savings of £3.9 million over the next two financial years because of Government cuts.

They say previous predictions that increasing charges would put people off coming to the city proved unfounded. Figures show a 4% increase in the number of people using City Council car parks over the last year.
