Exmouth boy racers targeted

But only one has no tax, insurance and MOT

It's the bane of seafront life in Exmouth; the [presumed] yobs who gather on the Esplanade to rev their engines and speed alongside the golden mile of sand.

And though it's been going on for 50 years, every generation has a story to tell.

On Friday night, police had a crackdown, following "ongoing complaints from residents who are concerned about the way vehicles are being driven through the town."

In the noughties, the seafront road was realigned, with curves created and traffic islands installed. The idea was to slow down traffic, and for responsible drivers it does. But it makes a great slalom track too to test your skidding skills, if you're so minded. The boy racers - and, let's not be sexist here, the girls too - love it.

On some summer evenings, particularly at weekends, somewhere between 30 and 50 souped up vehicles congregate to take part in the fun. It's noisy. It's dangerous.

On Exmouth resident says: "By and large, the behaviour goes unchallenged, so it's good to know the police are taking action. If you look down from the coastal path - which is the safest place to be - you'll frequently see high speeds, dangerous manoeuvres and high jinx."

Police specials say Friday evening's operation targeted dangerous drivers. "Officers say in just one of the cases they dealt with, the driver had no insurance, MOT or tax."
