And 700,000 have had at least one dose

More than 700,000 people in Devon have had their first dose of a coronavirus vaccine, with almost half a million having had a second jab.

The statistics, which provide the position as of May 17, show 1,169,431 have vaccines delivered in Devon, with 729,168 being a first dose, and 440,263 a second dose.

Across Devon and Cornwall, more than 70 per cent of adults have had their first dose, with around 45 per cent having had a second dose.

Of the adult population, 75.4 per cent in East Devon, 55.3 per cent in Exeter, 72.1 per cent in Mid Devon, 71.9 per cent in North Devon, 64.2 per cent in Plymouth, 73.8 per cent in South Hams, 74.3 per cent in Teignbridge, 72.5 per cent in Torbay, 74.3 per cent in Torridge, and 77.2 per cent in West Devon, have had one dose.

Of these adults too, 48.8 per cent in East Devon, 32 per cent in Exeter, 39.2 per cent in Mid Devon, 45.2 per cent in North Devon, 35.8 per cent in Plymouth, 44.6 per cent in South Hams, 44.8 per in Teignbridge, 46.4 per cent in Torbay, 45.3 per cent in Torridge and 51.7 per cent in West Devon, have had a second dose.

West Devon’s 51.7 per cent for a second dose is the second highest of any region in England, with only Wyre having a higher figure.

It comes as second doses of the Covid-19 vaccination are being brought forward for people aged over 50, frontline health and social care workers and people who are in at-risk groups. This follows the government announcement last week reducing the time between doses for those groups from 12 to around eight weeks.

NHS Devon Clinical Commissioning Group primary care medical director Alex Degan said: “Please be patient and wait for us to contact you.  Our GP practices and vaccination centres are very busy working to rearrange these appointments.  We know that some people will be anxious to have their second dose as soon as possible and will call you as soon as we can.

“If you need proof of your vaccination status please use the NHS app or call 119.  Your GP will not be able to provide this for you.”

Patients who used the National Booking Service will receive a text message prompting them to cancel their existing second appointment and rebook an earlier one.

The move is part of plans to tackle rising cases of the Indian variant.
