High number of debt cases dealt with by city CAB

The amount of debt being run up by people in Exeter is continuing to rise as incomes fail to keep pace with living expenses.

The local Citizens Advice Bureau say the overall level of debt they're helping people to deal with is currently up by 29 per cent on last year.

The average amount per individual is more than 13 thousand pounds.

Chief executive Steve Barriball says even though there are signs that the local economy is recovering, the root causes of people's financial problems - such as low wages and high fuel and food costs - won't ease for a while.
