Houses will replace hospital

Bovey Tracey hospital closed in 2017

Plans to demolish a cottage hospital and build six new homes in its place have been revealed.

Bovey Tracey Hospital dates back to 1931 but closed in 2017.

The Furzeleigh Lane building had been registered with Teignbridge Council as an asset of community value, but no viable use or community group came forward with a bid for the site.

And now plans by H2land Ltd on behalf of the Torbay and South Devon Foundation Trust, who own the site, have been submitted to Teignbridge to demolish the building and build six new homes in its place. Profits from the scheme will go towards healthcare facilities in the region, a statement says.

It adds: “The existing facility no longer meets the needs of modern healthcare and the building itself is not suitable to be adapted. The building fabric and construction does not lend itself to being converted whilst achieving the latest in energy efficient standards of construction. This scheme is designed to provide a sensitive scheme of new homes whilst delivering a capital return to the Trust."

Teignbridge Council will consider the plans at a later date.
