Launch of non-emergency medical service postponed

The NHS in Devon has postponed the launch of the new 1-1-1 non-emergency phone service.

It was due to go live this month - but now it's been put off untiil Septenber.

Devon's two clinical commissioning groups say they want to spend more time learning from the areas where the service is up and running, to make sure they get it right here.

The regional ambulance trust - whose staff are used to taking 999 calls - will be providing the 111 service.

And while the call handlers are not doctors or nurses, the team in charge of introducing the change in Devon says they will be well trained, and monitored by nurses who will listen in to the calls and ensure that callers are given good advice.
