Met Office boss quits

The new Met Office supercomputer in Exeter

No reason given. No thanks for his work in brief statement.

The boss of the Exeter-based Met Office has left his job suddenly - and without explanation. A terse statement from the company says virtually nothing about the reasons for Rob Varley’s departure, and doesn’t thank him for his four years in the role. He’d been on the management team there since 2007.

Mr Varley's deputy, Nick Jobling, has become interim chief executive until they find a replacement. The Met Office recently lost one of its highest profile contracts, providing weather forecasts to the BBC.

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, has simply repeated the brief Met Office statement.
