More help available for dementia sufferers

A new support network for dementia sufferers and their families has been set up in Exeter.

The county council has worked with the Alzheimer's Society to open a regional office in the city, which will assign trained support workers to dementia sufferers when they are diagnosed, and liaise with their families.

In the past Devon only had two part-time support workers for the whole of the county... but council funding and the use of volunteers has enabled the charity to extend its support network.

Currently only 36 per cent of sufferers have a formal diagnosis - but it's hoped that more people will seek help if they know there is support for them.
