MP calls for electric car subsidy

Anne Marie Morris also called for a rise in the number of charging points

Devon MP Anne-Marie Morris says ‘there will have to be a subsidy’ to enable people in extremely rural areas to buy electric cars.

Speaking at a debate in the Commons this week, the Conservative for Newton Abbot said in areas such as hers, the car is key, and many people will not be able to afford a new electric vehicle.

“We do not have many buses and we do not have many trains, so what might the Government do to support us?” she said, before adding: “Many people in extremely rural areas have very old cars, and will not be able to afford a spanking new electric car. There will have to be a subsidy.”

Ms Morris also called for a rise in the number of charging points.

“Teignbridge, my local district council, has two—or at least is applying for two—but that will not get us very far, especially as the car is the main form of transport.”

This month the transport secretary said a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars could come in as early as 2032.
