Number of livestock deaths on Dartmoor 'horrendous'

3 ponies hit last week, 2 died.

So far in 2018, 186 animals have been hit and 155 of those died.

Just last week, 2 ponies died and a 3rd has serious injuries.

The Dartmoor Livestock protection Society has described the figures as 'horrendous'.

They are calling for drivers to slow down and be aware that they are sharing the road with animals. At this time of year, when the roads have been gritted, they are attracted to the roadside.

Livestock protection officer for Dartmoor Karla McKechnie told Radio Exe: "Our main concern with driving on Dartmoor is driving with awareness, knowing that you're not using the road on your own, you're sharing it with animals. Dartmoor is very much a working landscape, there are animals everywhere. Expect the unexpected on the moors, expect there to be animals on the roadside. They are dark. Cows are dark. Ponies are dark. And they do loiter and linger by the roadside.
