A Devon boy is becoming one of the first in the South West to take part in the new research.
Noah from Honiton has severe learning difficulties and his DNA will be analysed along with that of his Mum and Dad.
It will then be used to see if researchers can pinpoint the cause of the youngster's learning difficulties.
