Success for Labour in city council elections

Exeter's Labour party are celebrating this afternoon after increasing their seats on the city council, following the local elections.

They took two seats from the Conservatives - including that of the Tory group leader, Yolanda Henson - and one from the Liberal Democrats ... increasing their number to 27.

The Conservatives took one seat from the Lib Dems.

There was little evidence of a swing towards the UK Independence Party - who received just under 15 per cent of the vote.

Turnout was 41 per cent.
