Infection rates still high though

For the first time since mid-September, no one has died of coronavirus in Devon and Cornwall in the last 24 hours.

The figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) show that from the week of May 22 to May 28, registered up to June 5,  none of the 269 deaths registered in the two counties had Covid-19 mentioned on the death certificate.

It is the sixth week in a row where there were no deaths in a care home in the two counties and the 11th consecutive week where the total number of Covid related deaths was in single figures.

It is the first time for 35 weeks, since the week of September 19-25, when there were no deaths related to Covid-19 recorded in Devon and Cornwall and the second successive week whereby Devon did not see a death recorded – the first time that has happened since the last week of July and the first week of August.

Mid Devon has no deaths for the 2nd week running), East Devon, South Hams and Teignbridge (for the 3rd week running), West Devon (for the 4th week running), Torbay (for the 5th week running), Exeter (for the 8th week running),  and North Devon (for the 156th week running)

In total, 1,748 deaths from coronavirus have been registered across Devon and Cornwall, with 961 in hospitals, 658 in care homes, 117 at home, five in a hospice, three in a communal establishment and four ‘elsewhere’.

Current deaths in the region stand at, 212 in East Devon, 168 in Torbay, 130 in Teignbridge, 128 in Exeter, 83 in Mid Devon, 71 in North Devon, 55 in Torridge, 53 in the South Hams, 40 in West Devon, and none on the Isles of Scilly.

Deaths that have occurred since May 28 will be recorded in next week’s figures, as long as the deceased lived within Devon and Cornwall, the death has been registered, and Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.
