Region's covid death rate rising

Tuesday, 26 January 2021 08:41

100 people died within 12 days in January

Covid-19 deaths in Devon and Cornwall’s hospital have risen at the fastest rate since the beginning of the pandemic.

By 25 January, 706 people have died in hospital within 28 days of a positive test, in the two counties since 17 March 2020

But it took only 12 days for 100 people to die with covid between the 600th and 700th death. That's the fastest rate of the pandemic so far.

However last spring fewer people were being tested for and therefore the figures may be an underestimate for that period when it took 17 days for the 101st to 200th death.

During the first two weeks of January, Devon and Cornwall hospitals have been supporting national efforts by taking patients from outside the region. The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, as well as Torbay Hospital and Derriford Hospital, have taken patients from elsewhere.

The first death in one of Devon and Cornwall’s hospitals by date of death occurred on 17 March last year, with the 100th on 8 April, the 200th on 25 April, the 300th on 24 October, the 400th on 27 November, the 500th on 19 December, the 600th on 11 January and the 700th on 23 January.

Of the deaths, 220 have occurred at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, with 166 at Derriford Hospital, 121 at Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust, 85 at Torbay Hospital, 71 at North Devon District Hospital, 39 in Cornish Partnership Foundation hospitals, three at Mount Gould Hospital, and one at Tavistock Hospital.
