Big Wheel coming to Dawlish Warren

Dawlish Warren big wheel plans would be a major asset to the area

It could be there for 15 years.

Plans have been submitted by the owner of the amusement park, Shaw Wallis, to operate a 34m tall observation wheel on the existing grassy area of Beach Walk.

The wheel would provide views over the Exe Estuary and would complement and further enhance the current amusement park, arcade and food unites at the Funder Park.

The application says: “The operator of the amusement park was approached by Teignbridge District Council to see if he was willing to operate an observation wheel on the site. Modern day observation wheels have become synonymous with holiday resorts with mainly coastal town having one to offer to holidaymakers to take in the view of the surrounding areas.

“The wheel is not expected to attract any more visitors to the Warren. What the proposal does offer is an added attraction to these visitors already on site and will offer an elevated viewing position of the coast and the Special Protection Area without the need to encroach onto the wildlife reserve, which will reduce any further harm to the area.”

Draft Heads of Terms, subject to planning permission, have been tabled between the applicant and the council, with a suggested lease of 15 years.
