Police are concerned that so-called 'hate crimes' against gay and lesbian people in Devon are going unreported.. because the victims fear they won't be taken seriously.
Several officers and the Police and Crime Commissioner attended the Exeter Pride event at the weekend to meet people from the gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans community and reassure them that any physical or verbal attacks will be treated as crimes.
They are emphasising that verbally abusing someone is a public order offence, and say it'll be taken even more seriously if the abuse is homophobic.
