Kick-start: Assistant podcast producer

Job title: Assistant podcast producer
Contract: Six months
To apply: Go to your local job centre and enquire under the Kickstart scheme

Radio Exe is Devon’s commercial station, broadcasting on FM in Exeter, Mid and East Devon, and on DAB across Devon’s best bits. We’re available on smart speakers by asking for ‘Radio Exe Devon’.

We broadcast from studios at Matford Business Park, Exeter, and also provide the Local Democracy Reporter Scheme on behalf of the BBC in Devon.

With the help of the Kickstart scheme, we are able to offer opportunities for six months to three talented young people.

We are looking for someone to help us produce two new weekly podcasts; one based around Devon news, one on local sport.

You will have a wide range of interests and skills, and an ability to work both on your own and as part of a small team. You will have some ability already in audio recording and editing and, ideally, video production too, and in social media.

The tasks

Editorial

  • Working with an editor, you will suggest stories that should be covered in each podcast
  • You will plan the content; which could be interviews with our own journalists or outside contributors
  • You will be able to write short introductions to stories

Production

  • You will record the content, mainly using our studio in Exeter or mobile devices
  • You will edit the content into short-packages
  • You will undertake the final mix and balance
  • You will publish the audio once it is approved by the editor

Promotions

  • You will promote the podcasts using social media and other publicity outlets, including Radio Exe’s own channels

Promotional events

  • You will also be required to attend station events, sometimes at weekends and in the evenings, being the public face of Radio Exe

The skills

  • You will need a high standard of written English, including grammar, spelling and punctuation. We can teach some elements, and we will provide regular training sessions in media law and copywriting. This can be quite challenging and will require a high degree of self-discipline.
  • It will help if you have a strong news and sport knowledge, particularly about Devon
  • You will need some audio editing skills. We use Adobe Audition. If you have video production skills too, that’s a bonus
  • A good broadcast voice is desirable, but not essential
  • You will need to be able to engage easily with people from all walks of life
