Club given permission to create disabled facilities
Disabled bowlers in Brixham have been given a boost.
The town’s bowling club in Nelson Road has been given permission to create a new access ramp and door to cater for players with mobility issues.
Members of Torbay Council’s planning committee backed the plans unanimously.
Cllr Anna Tolchard (Con, St Peters with St Marys) said her husband is an avid bowls player while her niece and nephew had both captained England.
“People who can’t participate in other games can continue to play bowls for a very long time,” she said. “I welcome this application. It’s a marvellous sport.”
On behalf of the club, Vic Ellery told the committee the changes would enable more people to play the sport they loved.
And Cllr Mandy Darling (Lib Dem, Tormohun) said: “Access is key. Everybody has the right to be able to access places. Sometimes people with disabilities are excluded from participating in things they would really like to do.
“I really welcome this.”
