Drama club to launch £2 million fundraiser
An East Devon drama club is to launch a fundraising campaign to try to generate £2 million to build a new theatre.
Salterton Drama Club wants to replace the existing Salterton Playhouse in Budleigh Salterton, which they say is coming to the end of its working life.
Its chairperson Penny Hill said they now have the opportunity to create "a dynamic new premises which can serve not just our club, but the wider community, providing future generations with a sustainable, purpose-built theatre."
She continued: “As a charitable organisation, we have always sought to serve the community by enriching lives through exceptional amateur theatre. Now we’re hoping that the community and those with an interest in the arts will get behind this — not just with their hearts but with their donations and funding efforts to help us deliver this ambitious project as soon and seamlessly as possible.”
Estimates show that of around 8,000 amateur theatre groups in the UK, only about 150 are known to have their own premises. The Salterton Playhouse was built in 1971.
The club has published images of how its new theatre could look.
