Crediton has designated itself a dementia friendly town, after months of work by organisations including the Rotary Club, Senior Voice and community representatives
The Devon Alzheimers Society has been training staff at local shops and businesses to be aware of the signs of dementia, and how to talk to people with the condition.
It comes just a day before the national launch of the 'purple angel' symbol which can be displayed by businesses whose staff have had similar training.
