Devon and Cornwall police say they'll be able to give more information on their planned collaboration with the Dorset force in the next few months.
The proposal was welcomed this week in an external report on how police forces have dealt with reduced Government funding.
Devon and Cornwall already collaborate with Dorset in some areas and are looking to extend that across a range of policing operations and functions.
The cost-cutting has led to the local force losing 15% of its officers since 2011, as well as many of its backroom staff.
