The fall at Beer has been investigated
A plan to repair an area of cliffs that suffered a land slip in an East Devon beauty spot is ongoing, according to the landowner.
The cliff fall at Beer Beach happened last week (Friday 6 February) and pictures soon emerged showing storage cabins crushed among the debris.
East Devon District Council warned that the affected area, near Ducky’s beach cafe, would be cordoned off until it was safe.
And now, the council has just alerted residents to the fact it has had to close Jacob’s Ladder in Sidmouth while it investigates potential repair work there.
The land where the cliff fall happened in Beer is actually owned by Clinton Devon Estates, a large landowner in the area.
It said: “Engineers have been on site at Beer Beach to assess last week’s cliff fall.
“A section of the beach by Ducky’s cafe has been cordoned off by East Devon District Council to protect visitors.
“Once we have a full assessment, a plan will be put in place for contractors to carry out necessary works, in liaison with East Devon District Council.”
The update comes as East Devon revealed this week (Friday 13 February) that the Jacob’s Ladder Steps remained closed following a recent structural inspection.
“This identified repairs needed to certain structural components,” the council said in its Facebook post about the issue.
“Public safety is our priority, and we are taking a careful, considered approach to ensure the steps can be repaired appropriately and brought back into use when it is safe to do so.
“As a Grade II listed structure, Jacob’s Ladder requires a specialist repair approach that protects its historic character as well as its structural integrity. We are working closely with structural timber specialists and our conservation team to review the inspection findings in detail, confirm the most suitable repair method, and make sure any works are undertaken to the correct standard.”
The council added it “recognises how important Jacob’s Ladder is to the local area” and its role as a “valued local landmark”.
“The steps will remain closed until further notice, and we will provide a further update as soon as we are able to share more information,” the council added.
