Police are appealing to the public to help them piece together how Peter Wilkinson sustained the injury.
The 53-year-old woke after a night out with no recollection of what had happened.
He remembers leaving Wings Bar, going to the Strand pub, before walking along Exeter Road in Exmouth.
It happened in the early hours of Saturday August 12th.
