Students evacuated last night
Students living at new accommodation The Barn, on Cheeke Street had to be evacuated last night after a mattress caught fire.
Crews were called to the site - opposite the bus station - at 2106. 4 engines from across Exeter and Topsham were sent to the scene. The fire affected the 7th floor which is unoccupied.
Their log says: "Fire within the corridor on the seventh floor involving a mattress. 50% of the corridor damaged by fire and 100% damage by smoke. Minor water damage to the sixth floor. Crews extinguished using six breathing apparatus, three main jets, one dry riser, thermal imaging camera and small tools"
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue believe the fire was started deliberately. Devon and Cornwall Police says there will be a full investigation today.
