Murdered teenager's body never found
Forty-two years after the death of his daughter, John Tate, formerly of Aylesbeare in East Devon, has died.
Mr Tate was a prominent figure in the press in 1978 when 13-year-old's Genette disappeared without trace whilst on her paper round. Her abandoned bicycle on a country lane became an enduring picture of the sad scene.
Mr Tate, 77, had been in poor health for a number of years and had moved to Manchester.
Devon and Cornwall Police launched a new investigation into the murder about six years ago, and concluded their only suspect was known child murderer Robert Black. Mr Tate also believed Black was his daughter's killer, but wanted proof. Black died in prison and his ashes were scattered anonymously at sea.
Mr Tate was heartbroken that his daughter's body was never found.
