Government cuts contributing to A&E crisis, says MP

The MP for Exeter says Government cuts to social care are among the factors contributing to a crisis in England's accident and emergency services.

In the last two weeks, several professional bodies including the College of Emergency Medicine have warned that A&E departments are on the brink of collapse.

Ben Bradshaw says scaled-down social services are leading to more elderly people turning to hospitals for medical help - and there are also problems with the new non-emergency 111 number in some areas.

He's also highlighting the relaxing of targets for A&E waiting times and says only a third of A&E departments in the last four weeks have met that target.
