City lands huge maritime deal

Plymouth has secured a major defence deal to boost its maritime sector and create hundreds of new jobs.

Sutton and Devonport MP, and Minister of Defence, Luke Pollard says this will bring new opportunities, from skilled engineering jobs to apprenticeships for young people.

Plymouth Moor View MP Fred Thomas is also delighted, saying it will boost local skills initiatives.

Plymouth is home to the largest naval base in Western Europe and will see £4 billion of Ministry of Defence investment over the next 10 years.

It was recently named the National Centre for Marine Autonomy to drive innovation in maritime autonomous systems.

This deal is backed by a £250 million UK-wide fund aimed at supporting defence growth and boosting economic benefits in areas with high potential.

The defence funding will support innovation in ship and submarine technology and increase training in engineering and nuclear operations.

Military firm Babcock alone is expected to need more than 5,000 new employees over the next decade.

The City Council has assembled a team to allocate the funds effectively.

Plymouth is one of six areas chosen by the government to share the funding.
