15 hours to put out
A huge fire at Moretonhampsted has raged through the nigh. It broke out around 9.30 pm on Thursday, leading to fire appliances from Moretonhampsted, Chagford and Bovey Tracey being sent, later joined by more crews from Newton Abbot, Okehampton, and Ashburton and a water carrier from Danes Castle in central Exeter. The fire service's welfare unit from Credition, command support vehicle from Honiton and an incident support unit from Bovey Tracey also attended.
With the fire spreading, including to a biomass boiler and wood pellets. crews tackled it from a defensive position due to unknown hazards in the building. Nearby residents from neighbouring properties were evacuated for their own safety.
Before long, water from a swimming pool was supplied to the fire ground using a portable pump and two main jets.
By 1.30am more crescent joined the work, arriving from Buckfastleigh, Torquay and Newton Abbot
Five thousand tonnes of wood chippings were dampened down using a thatching lance, light portable pump, one main jet, triple extension ladder and a thermal imaging camera. It was just before noon on Friday that the fire was finally declared out.
