Police unveil new crime-fighting boat

Gadget-packed vessel set sails

Devon and Cornwall Police have a new weapon in their arsenal: Neptune, a high-speed boat ready to tackle maritime emergencies.

Funded by the Home Office, this new vessel is patrolling both coastlines to tackle everything from catching illegal fishing to clamping on smuggling and drug trafficking operations.

The boat packed with high-tech gear, including an infrared camera and an underwater drone for searching in tricky conditions.

It's bigger and more stable than their old boats, so they can stay out on the water longer, even in rough weather.

Neptune will not only help with crime prevention, but also protect valuable historical sites along the coast.

Chief Constable James Vaughan said:

“Neptune will significantly enhance their ability to combat crimes, from lobster pot theft to counterterrorism and organised immigration.

This new vessel represents a major advancement in their maritime capabilities, allowing them to better safeguard both the coastline and its communities better.

Neptune will play a crucial role in protecting the area's rich underwater heritage, including numerous historically significant shipwrecks, some of which are designated monuments or war graves, by deterring illegal diving and looting activities.”
