Labour hold the other city seat up for grabs

Reform UK has claimed its first seat on Exeter City Council.

Tony Payne won the Mincinglake and Whipton by-election with a 159 vote majority over Labour candidate Paula Black. The Independent and Green candidates both out-scored their Conservative and Liberal Democrat rivals.

The by-election was called after the resignation of sitting Labour councillor Naima Allcock.

However, Labour did hold on to the Topsham council seat left vacant by the resignation of Joshua Ellis-Jones from the council.

James Cookson beat Conservative rival Keith Sparkes by 28 votes, with Reform third ahead of the Liberal Democrat and Green candidates.

Labour now holds 22 of the 39 seats on the city council, maintaining its overall majority.
